The Colorfield Performance 2006Following his land art project "The Colorfield Performance" of the year 2000 artist Dirk Hakze is currently preparing a new project which is planned to start in summer 2006 on a German shoal island in the North Sea. Two islands, Borkum and Norderney, have expressed their interest to participate in the project. Both islands have enough technical possibilities and the right artistic environment to be eligible for the realization of the project. The decision which island will be chosen depends finally on the offered financial and organisational aid. During fall 2004 the island of choice will be announced. "The Colorfield Performance" is the principal/general term for an extraordinary land art project that Dirk Hakze wants to realize in cooperation with other artists. The concept intends to let flow together the artists´individual contributions into a joint effort in order to create a new entity of large format. Thereby it will be possible to materialize a prominent piece of art bound to form a distinct and prominent sign in the landscape. In 1992 the concept was performed for the very first time on the Dutch island Terschelling during the Oerol festival. Then, 144 panels were painted that were placed in the shape of a 600 m long snake creeping through the dunes. In 2000 a similar project, though on a much larger scale, was realized on the Dutch island Schiermonnikoog. This time, a thousand panels forming a huge water lily leaf were installed on the beach. Together with artist Theo Cazjmir Dirk Hakze produced 550 paintings during a period of four months. Distinctive for this approach was that the two artists always worked simultaneously on one panel.
Apart from his land art projects Dirk Hakze has in recent years been working on various big urban projects and public commissions. In this respect he has somewhat specialized on the painting of public buildings, murals and monuments. From 1981 to 1986 Hakze studied "Monumental Design" at the art academy at Leeuwarden in the Netherlands. Afterwards, he had further training in the management of art at the art academy of Utrecht, The Netherlands. In 1986, his interest was raised to combine music with painting after he had visited the exhibition "The sound of paintings/Vom Klang der Bilder" in Stuttgart, Germany. So in 1987 he started to do painting performances, during which, together with other artists, he created new paintings on stage during huge jazz, blues or pop concerts. Amongst others, he accompanied concerts of James Brown, Miles Davis, Carlos Santana, John(ny?) Lee Hooker and Van Morrison. Since 2001 Hakze has also been realizing a sequence of panoramic projects with the titel "The Colors of Music" which are performed on different German and Dutch North Sea islands. The aim is to intergrate modern classical music in the process of painting. For each island an own composer is chosen. Thus, a series of paintings has been created corresponding to the music of Philip Glass, Astor Piazzolla, Dmitri Shostakovitch as well as Toru Takemitsu. The last sequel of "The Colors of Music" is planned for 2005. The concept of Hakze´s "The Colorfield Performance 2006" differs strongly from earlier projects. Its idea is to paint 2006 panels in about a hundred days. The multiplex panels used have two formats, 122 x 122 cm and 100 x 122 cm, and will be fixed in the ground by wooden posts. These easels with their white panels will be installed in such a way that they form a large ellipse measuring 280 x 400 m. The novel feature of this interesting project is that artist Dirk Hakze will paint all of the panels together with a big group/(large number?) of other artists. A hundred panels will be painted by Hakze himself, the others will be done by the other artists. Dirk Hakze derives the inspiration for his painting performances not only from the landscape, the weather and the nature, but also wants to establish a connection between painting and classical music, such as as he is doing in his current project "The Colors of Music". For "The Colorfield Performance 2006" he has chosen a symphony of Gustav Mahler. Using a head-set that still allows to perceive the surrounding noise he will each day engage in creating a new painting.
All participants in this Gesamtkunstwerk work under the same conditions and with the same working materials as Dirk Hakze. Every artist will have one day´s time to finish one painting. Naturally, is an obligation to identify oneself with the underlying idea of the project. Each day twenty artists will be working on their panels. And each artists will be assigned to a certain location on the beach which has been chosen by Hakze in advance. All participants will be provided with a palet having mostly light colors, but there are also some earth colors and white color, while the black color is missing. Pensels, painting rollers and other utensils will also be available to the participants. It is thought that, when seen from afar, the colors will flow into each other, therfore creating a big symphony of colors, "The Colorfield Performance". The realization of "The Colorfield Performance 2006" is scheduled to begin on May 1, 2006 and to last until August 31, 2006. This strech of time will be divided into six periods as pointed out on the registration form. Each participating artist can opt for three prefered periods, according to his first, second or third choice. In order to guarantee a smooth running of the project, it is assumed that all participants will arrive well prepared. Therefore, the artists should arrive already a day in advance in order to get accustomed to the performance of the project. The first group of twenty artists will start on May 1, 2006. The last paintings will be done on August 30, 2006. Afterwars, the paintings will stay a further three weeks on the beach. Each painting remains the property of the artist, unless he gives the organisatior (organizing committee?) special order to sell the painting. The conditions of sale can be found on the website www.thecolorfieldperformance.com . After the end of the project all panels will be brought from the island to the main land where they will be stored at a predetermined depot. Safe transfer as well as storage are cared for by the organizer. All artists participating in the projet can either pick up their paintings themselves at the store-house or, for an extra charge, ask for their panels to be send to their ateliers. For each painting there is a participation fee of € 350 to be paid. After receipt of the registration form participation will be confirmed, depending on the date of arrival of the form. There is also the posssibility to inscribe directly via the website www.thecolorfieldperformance.com. The closing date for registration is December 31, 2004. After participations has been confirmed an authorization will be send for the payment of € 75 for the inscription. This sum will later be subtracted from the participation fee which is due to be paid which on September 20, 2005 at the latest. Besides the participation of individuals, there is also the possibility for art associations, artistic societies as well as companies to commission one or more artists to take part in the project. In case of sponsors enabling more than ten artists to participate, they will explicitely be named in the brochure, on the website and in the newsletter. We further offer these sponsors to establish a direct link on our website. Upon request, the organizing committee can also help to choose the artists. If participation in the project shall be given as a present, there are vouchers available. Further information can be found on our website. Participation in "The Colorfield Performance 2006" requires a two nights´ stay on the island, where the project will be taking place. From November 30, 2004 onwards our website will feature a variety of offers, where and how to stay overnight. Reservations and bookings can directly be made with the spa organization. It is recommended to make reservations as soon as possible, because capacities are known to be limited during summer time. The organizers of "The Colorfield Performance 2006" will take full care to introduce both participants as well as sponsors to the public. All participants will be named individually on the website. For anyone keen to have more public attention, we will arrange contacts with the local or regional press. Additionally, sponsors will find a variety of possibilities to fund the project. Please send your enquiries per e-mail. The actual progress of the project can be followed by subscription of the newsletter.
